Holographic approach to dense matter in compact stars

Dense matter in the interior of compact stars is notoriously difficult to treat from first principles. Several candidate phases of Quantum Chromodynamics at large baryon density are known, but the exact phase structure is poorly understood. I will discuss a strong-coupling approach based on the gauge-string duality ("holography"), in particular within the so-called Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model. Various phases have recently been studied in this approach, such as quarkyonic matter. I will also present recent results for the phase structure including isospin-asymmetric baryonic matter and pion condensation and their coexistence, and I will demonstrate that realistic neutron stars can be constructed entirely from matter described by holography, including the crust of the star.
