Area Attractions

Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico are rich in history, cultural and outdoor activities. Within the city limits, the NNPSS participants can enjoy the shows at the Lensic Performing Arts Center and visit many unique museums, such as the Palace of the Governors, the Georgia O’Keef museum, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the numerous private galleries. The summer school will overlap with the Santa Fe Opera season and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, which are world-class musical events. The historic Taos Pueblo, designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark, is just 70 miles north of Santa Fe. Class III (beginner) and IV (advanced) whitewater rafting trips on the Rio Grande (the Taos Box and the Racecourse) are a possibility for the more adventurous participants. We plan to organize day hikes to Wheeler Peak, the highest summit in New Mexico, the Santa Fe Baldy and the Atalaya mountain to fit varying levels of skill. A trip to the Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos can be combined with a visit to the cave dwellings in the Bandelier National Monument.
